"Roberto Martinez: Everton to appoint former Wigan manager"

The 39-year-old won the FA Cup at Wigan this season, but asked to be released from the DW Stadium after failing to keep them in the Premier League.

He succeeds David Moyes, who recently announced his departure for Manchester United after 11 years in the job.

Latics chairman Dave Whelan, who allowed the Spaniard to speak to other clubs, is already seeking a new boss.

Former Swansea manager Martinez joined Wigan in June 2009, and was a target for Aston Villa in June 2011 but opted to stay with the Latics. He was also strongly linked with the Liverpool job last summer.

Under his management, Wigan finished 16th twice and in 15th place before slipping to relegation this season.
